How To Make A Sunburst Card ~ Stampin’ Up! In Colors

Wanna learn how to make a sunburst card? It’s a fun and easy card designing technique and I have two different ways you can use it in your card making. The card ideas feature the fabulous NEW 2021-2023 Stampin’ Up! In Colors as well as the Color & Contour Bundle! However, keep in mind you can use these card layouts with ANY supplies you have on hand.

The Sunburst Design

Creating the sunburst card design is easier than you might think! Since I am lovin’ the NEW 2021-2023 In Colors, I knew they would work perfect for with this card design. The basic concept for creating this style of card involves cutting 5 strips of patterned paper in half, diagonally, to create triangular shapes. These strips are 1-1/4 x 6 inches and they will be used to create the sunburst pattern on a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of cardstock.

Next, take the triangular shapes and lay them in front of you to create a pattern. I arranged the triangular pieces, by color, in the following order: Pale Papaya, Polished Pink, Fresh Freesia, Soft Succulent and Evening Evergreen. Once you have the first 5 triangles laid out, then repeat the color pattern with the other 5 triangular pieces. You will end up with 10 triangular pieces that have a repeating color pattern. I highly recommend you watch this week’s video to see the creation of the sunburst pattern in action!

Card Orientation

Now that you have an idea of how to create the sunburst card design, let’s talk about some ways that you can use it in your card making. One of the easiest ways to use it in landscape and portrait style. You can completely change the look of a card simply by changing the orientation. Now the cool thing about this is you can use the exact same measurements to create the card. Simply change the orientation of the card when you decorate it.

The first card features the sunburst card design in portrait style. The second card features the sunburst design in landscape style. The sunburst design on both of these cards was create by cutting 5 strips of patterned paper at 1-1/4 x 6 inches. Of course I used all 5 of the In Colors to create the strips. Next, I cut them in half, diagonally, to create the 10 triangular shapes. Each of the 10 pieces will be used to create the sunburst pattern on a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of cardstock.

Sunburst Card Sizes

Now the cool thing about this sunburst card design is you can create it in a variety of different sizes! You can change the width and/or the length of the strips of paper you are using to create all sorts of sunburst design variations. For the first couple of cards, above, I cut 5 strips of patterned paper at 1-1/4 x 6 inches. For the cards I am featuring below, I cut 5 strips of patterned paper at 1-1/4 x 4 inches. Cutting the papers 2 inches shorter, simple decreases the size of the sunburst.

Since I am using smaller strips of paper, each of the 10 pieces will be used to create the sunburst pattern on a 5 x 2-3/4 inch piece of cardstock. Of course you can really adjust the pieces to any size. The wider the pieces, the less you will be able to add across the cardstock. The thinner the pieces the more you will need in your sunburst design. So for example, if I were to cut 1 x 4 inches strips, I would need more than 5 strips, cut diagonally, to be able to cover the 5 x 2-3/4 inch piece of cardstock. So play around with this technique and create all sorts of fun sunburst designs!
