Discover how to create a simple yet stunning Faux Louver Design that will take your handmade cards to the next level! Today you will learn how you how to use ½-inch paper strips to create the beautiful illusion of a louvered panel—no special tools required.
This technique is incredibly easy to recreate and perfect for using up your favorite bold patterned papers or those papers with a pre-printed “scene”on them. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced card maker, you’ll love how versatile and eye-catching this design is!
The Faux Louver Design
So first let’s talk about the Faux Louver Card Design. This design mimics the look of traditional louvered panels (those angled slats you might see on shutters or vents). The technique involves cutting and layering 1/2″ strips of patterned paper.
For this card, start by cutting down the cabin scene from the Waterside Retreat patterned paper to 3-1/2 x 3-7/8.” Next, cut the paper into seven 1/2″ strips. Each strips measures 1/2 x 3-7/8.” The key to creating the Faux Louver Design is to “pop up” every other 1/2″ strip as you adhere them across a piece of cardstock. Use stampin’ dimensionals to pop up 3 of the 1/2″ strips.

It creates such a stunning look! I especially enjoy this technique with these little patterend paper scenes as it gives a 3D look to the design. This is a fantastic go-to technique when you want to create something unique in a short amount of time.
Waterside Retreat
This second card idea features the same Faux Louver technique. However, I simply created the card in landscape style and, of course, used a different scene from the patterned paper. You can get all the measurements in the tutorial at the end of this post.
Now keep in mind that this Faux Louver Design will work with a variety of different patterned papers. However, I am sure you are wondering where these beautiful scenes came from, right?

The cards I am sharing today feature a variety of NEW products from the Waterside Retreat Suite by Stampin’ Up!, This particular paper pack is coming out in the May–August 2026 Stampin’ Up! catalog. Need a catalog? You can request one HERE.
There are two full 12 x 12 ” sheets of beautiful waterside scenes in this pack of paper. You can easily cut out the different scenes from the patterned paper to use in your card making. They were perfect for showcasing this technique!
