Simple Paper Tearing for Card Making

Learn how to use this simple paper tearing technique to create a stunning look on your cards. And I have two different ways you can use this technique in your card making.

The cards feature the Shepherds Care stamp set and the Season of Elegance Designer Series from Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind you can use any supplies you have on hand to create this look.

Paper Tearing Layers

The first way you can use paper tearing in your card making is to create a few torn layers. This technique involves creating a torn edge on different pieces of cardstock and patterned paper. For these cards, I am showcasing the Shepherds Care stamp set with some of the Season of Elegance Designer Series paper. However, keep in mind you can use any supplies you have on hand with this technique.

Start with a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of white cardstock. Stamp the Shepherd image on the white cardstock and then tear the white cardstock. This enables you to create a torn edge next to the image. Save the small torn piece of white cardstock (the piece without the image) so you can use it as another layer.

Next, cut a piece of patterned paper which is the same length as that torn edge. For example, I cut a 4 x 4 inch piece of patterned paper to create the torn edge on the portrait style card. For the landscape style card, I used a 3 x 4 inch piece of patterned paper.

Adhere the torn edge of the white cardstock so it overlaps a bit onto the patterned paper. Now you are ready to create the torn edge on the patterned paper. Simply tear the patterned paper in the same direction as you torn the white cardstock. Arrange all the layers on the card front as shown.

Torn Card Front Design

The second way you can use paper tearing in your card making is to use the card front. Start by stamping the image directly on the card front. The torn edge is created by tearing the actual card front. Next, cut a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of patterned paper. Adhere the patterned paper behind the card front on the inside of the card. Once the patterned paper is secure to the card front, tear the paper in the same direction as the torn edge on the card front.

Notice how this particular design enables you to showcase both sides of the patterned paper! The shiny gold side of this paper is seen on the front side of the card. The more subtle design of this paper is seen on the inside of the card.
