3 Simple Ways to use Ribbon in Card Making

Sometimes it can be challenging to use ribbon in card making, especially when it comes to making little bows. Well today I have 3 simple ways you can use ribbon in your card making and only one of them, involves the creation of a bow.

Now the cards I am sharing with you today feature the NEW Christmastime Is Here bundle. It’s a gorgeous suite of products that include these beautiful patterned papers, gold embellishments a stamp set, die set and, of course, some ribbon! You can learn more about this products suite at http://bit.ly/ChristmastimeBundle

Ribbon Band

So the first way you can use ribbon in your card making is to adhere it flat to card so that it accents the patterned papers you are using. I prefer to use ribbon in this way whenever I want to cover up the “seams” between two different paper patterns. You can use any size ribbon however, the smaller sized ribbon (1/4 or 1/2 inch wide) adds just the right touch.

The first card features the 1/4 inch gold ribbon adhered to a 1/2 x 4 inch piece of Cherry Cobbler card stock. The ribbon is used to cover up the area where the two different patterned papers meet. The top piece of patterned paper measures 3-3/4 x 4 inches and the bottom is 1-1/2 x 4 inches.

The second card features the 1/4 inch gold ribbon overlapping onto two different patterned papers. Cut a 2 x 5-1/2 inch piece of Mossy Meadow card stock. Adhere a 1 x 5-1/2 inch piece of the red patterned paper and a 3/4 x 5-1/2 inch piece of the green patterned paper. The papers overlap slightly. Then simply adhere the ribbon over the “seam” where the papers meet. You can wrap any excess ribbon around to the back of the Mossy Meadow card stock before adhering the piece to your card.

Both of the cards are embellished with one of the beautiful floral images from the Christmastime Is Here patterned paper.

Ribbon Background

This next card features a fun way to use ribbon in the background of your card. Now you can create just about any type of design with ribbon so get creative with it!

To create this card, simply cut 6 different pieces of ribbon that will fit across a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of Cherry Cobbler card stock. I recommend laying the ribbon across the cards stock and then cutting it. This will ensure that you have enough ribbon to wrap the ends around to the back. You will be cutting 6 pieces; three of them in one direction and the other three in the opposite direction so that they criss cross as shown above. Once you have them cut, go ahead and adhere them to the card stock piece. Then simply embellish the card as desired.

This next card also features ribbon in the background; however the ribbon is used in between different patterned papers for a fun look! Simply cut two of your favorite patterned papers at 1 x 5 1/2 inches and 3 pieces of ribbon. Adhere them on a slight angle across a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of white card stock. Start adhering the pieces at the top and work your way down. Wrap the excess ribbon around to the back of the card stock and trim off the excess paper with a scissors.

Ribbon Scraps

These next two cards feature some simple design ideas using a few scrap pieces of ribbon. Now the first card features a few scraps of ribbon tucked behind the sentiment on the card. Simply add a bit of adhesive to the card and criss cross the ribbon. Then adhere the sentiment over the top with a few dimensionals.

The second card features a few scrap pieces of ribbon used to create the look of a present. The rectangular shaped presents were created with a piece of patterned paper that measures 1-3/4 x 2 inches. These pieces were added to a 2 x 2-1/4 inch piece of Cherry Cobbler card stock. Simply wrap some scrap pieces of ribbon around the rectangular shapes to make it look like wrapping on a present. You can tie a box on one of the pieces of ribbon or add some other type of embellishment.
