Floating Strip Technique for Card Making

If you love getting the most out of your crafting supplies, the Floating Strip Technique is about to become one of your favorites! Not only is it visually striking, but it also allows you to create two beautiful cards at once—using both the die-cut shape and the negative space left behind.

Today, I’m sharing how this simple, yet creative technique works, along with ideas for using it with your own supplies. While I’m featuring some new products from the upcoming May–August 2026 Stampin’ Up! catalog, this technique is incredibly versatile and works with anything you already have on hand.

The Floating Strip Technique

The Floating Strip Technique involves arranging strips of patterned paper across a window (or acetate) sheet, then cutting a shape from the center of the patterned paper strip design. You can create two cards at once by using this technique!

Start by choosing the patterned paper you want to use. Bold patterns work super with this technique because you will be cutting the pattern into 1/2″ wide strips. You can also use up scrap papers with this technique as well.

Adhere the 1/2″ wide strips across a piece of a window (acetate) sheet leaving space in between each piece. Be sure to watch the video for some tips on cutting and adhering the papers to keep a continuous design across the window sheet.

Once you have the 1/2″ pieces adhered to a window (acetate) sheet, you are ready to die cut a design in the center. You can use any die cut shape such as a circle, square, rectangle, etc. For the cards I am sharing today, I am using some of the layering Nested Essentials Dies.

First, use the die cut shape as the focal point for one of the cards. Next, use the negative space (the leftover piece) to create a beautiful background for the second card!

Tutorial & Supplies

If you’re looking for a creative way to stretch your supplies, the Floating Strips Technique is a must-try. Using both the die-cut shape and the negative space not only reduces waste but also gives you two unique, coordinating cards with minimal effort.

So grab those paper scraps, your favorite dies, and get busy creating—you might be surprised at just how much you can make with just one simple technique! Have a fun and creative day my friends! ~ Lynn
