Ink Smooshing for Card Making

Let’s take a look at a fun technique called ink smooshing! It’s a simple way to create the look of watercoloring and there are a variety of way you can use it in your card making.  This technique works well with any acrylic plates or blocks. However, I’m going to show you just how simple it is to ink smoosh using a stamp positioner tool!

The cards feature the Lovely Arrangements Bundle and a fun way to use the Stampin’ Positioner Tool from Stampin’ Up! to create artistic backgrounds for your handmade cards. I’ll also share extra tips and ideas for using this technique with tools you may already have.

What Is Ink Smooshing?

Ink smooshing is a simple background technique where you apply ink to an acrylic plate or block, spritz it with water, and then press the ink into watercolor paper. The result is a unique and slightly unpredictable watercolor pattern.

So today I am featuring this technique with the NEW stampin’ positioner tool from Stampin’ Up! A stamp positioner tool isn’t just for stamping—it’s also a fantastic tool for ink smooshing! The flat surface is perfect for adding ink and the spring-loaded acrylic plate makes it easy to press or “smoosh” the ink into your paper.

The Stampin’ Positioner Tool is not yet available for purchase. However, you can get this tool for FREE in your starter kit when you join Stampin’ Up! between February 3 – March 2, 2026. Learn more HERE.

The Technique

There are a variety of different ways you can use the ink smooshing technique in card making. You can keep it simple by using just one color or use multiple colors for added depth and interest. If you are new to ink smooshing, using a single ink color is a great way to start. It creates a fun watercolor background that will accent any stamped images. However, be sure to watch the video as I share some tips on how to use one, two, or three different colors with this ink smooshing technique.

Let’s talk about how ink smooshing actually works. Start by pressing or dragging your ink pad across a slick surface (a stamp positioner plate or acrylic block). Next, lightly spritz the ink with water. Press the ink onto watercolor paper. You can lift and re-press to achieve a desired look. Let the paper dry completely.

Once your background is dry, you can add stamped images, die-cut flowers, sentiments, and embellishments. The Lovely Arrangements Bundle pairs beautifully with ink-smooshed backgrounds as you can easily coordinate the stamped images with the ink smooshed colors! For these cards, I chose to use Darling Duckling, Calypso Coral, and Granny Apple Green.
