4 Creative Ways to Use One Stamp

Have you ever looked at a stamp set and wondered how to do more with it? If so, you are going to enjoy this post! Today I’m sharing four creative coloring techniques that will help you make 4 cards; each with a different look.

The cards feature the beautiful A Child Is Born stamp set from Stampin’ Up! However, the techniques I’m sharing today will work with any large stamp image you have in your stash. Whether you prefer a soft and subtle look or bold and dramatic color, you’ll find a method that suits your style.

Simple Techniques

The first couple of card ideas are creative and simple ways to use large stamp images without a lot of fuss. We are going to add color to the image without actually coloring it. And there are two different techniques you can use to achieve this.

The first technique involves stamping the image directly on patterned paper. It’s a simple way to add color to the image as you can let the paper do all the work! Choose a patterned paper with a subtle design that will not be too busy for the stamped image. The background design will show through the open areas of the stamp, giving your project a layered and artistic effect — no extra coloring required!

The second way you can stamp the image without coloring it, is to heat emboss it on patterned paper or a dark colored cardstock. Heat embossing is a classic way to elevate any stamped image. For this card, I stamped the image on black cardstock using versamark. Sprinkle the image with gold embossing powder, tap off the excess powder, and heat to set the image.

Coloring Techniques

The next two techniques involve a bit of coloring. We will look at two simple coloring techniques that will really make the image pop.

For a soft, hand-painted effect, watercolor pencils are a great choice. You can apply them directly to the image with ease. For the first card I started by stamping the image on Crumb Cake cardstock using Early Espresso ink. Color in different parts of the image using white and early espresso watercolor pencils. Very minimal coloring is needed because the Crumb Cake cardstock fills in the color for the image too.

When you want rich, vibrant color, reach for your Stampin’ Blends! These alcohol-based markers are perfect for blending and shading the stamped image. Stampin’ Blends are very easy coloring tools to use. Be sure to watch the video for some tips on shading and highlighting.

Tutorial & Supplies

Each of these different techniques highlights the versatility of a single stamp image. By getting creative with your coloring method, you can completely transform the mood and style of your project! I hope these coloring techniques inspire you to get creative with supplies you may already have on hand. You’ll be amazed at how different each card turns out! Be sure to watch the video for some tips on using these different techniques. Have a fun and creative day! ~ Lynn
