Pull Tab Window Cards

Interactive cards add an extra element of surprise and fun to your handmade creations. One popular interactive design is the Pull Tab Window Card. With a simple mechanism, you can create a card that reveals a hidden message or image when the tab is pulled. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to make a Pull Tab Window Card in both portrait and landscape styles using the gorgeous Mixed Media Florals Suite. But don’t worry if you don’t have these exact supplies—you can use what you have on hand to craft your own unique version!

Pull Tab Design

First let’s talk about the basic design for these pull tab cards. This interactive card does not open, it actually has a slider mechanism for the pull tab card. You simply pull the tab on the slider card to reveal the message underneath. The pull tab section can be removed from the card completely.

Start by creating the window for the card. Cut a 5-1/4 x 4″ piece of white cardstock. Die cut the square shape into the white cardstock to create a window. I used a 2-3/4″ square. However, you can use any shape to create the window.

Next, let’s create the pull tab card which I like to call the slider card. You can make the slider card any size. The key is to create a slider card which is a little bigger than the window opening. In this case, my slider card is 3-1/8 x 3-5/8″.

Once you have those two pieces, you are ready to create the slider mechanism. I recommend watching the video to see this process in action.

Portrait Style

This pull tab window card is created the same way as the landscape card idea. The only difference is that I changed the orientation of the card to portrait style. Notice how the window is at the top of the card. The pull tab section remains at the top of the card as well.

Besides changing the orientation, I decorated this card differently. I love the different florals in the Mixed Media Florals suite. You can learn more about this suite HERE.

Design Variations

Personalize your pull tab card by changing up the orientation of the window and pull tab. You can use the exact same measurements to create each of these 4 different variations. Simply decorate the card to match the orientation of the pull tab and window.

The portrait style variations show the pull tab on the top or the bottom of the card. The landscape style variations show the pull tab on either the left or right side of the card.

You can also create variations by adding layers of patterned paper on and under the pull tab section. For this pull tab card, I layered together some patterned paper scraps to create the pull tab section. It’s the exact same card as the first one I shared, however the layers of patterned paper give it a little different look.
