Rock and Roll Technique

Learn how to use the rock and roll technique to easily create a two-tone look on your stamp images! And I have two different ways you can use this technique in your card making. The cards feature the Hello Irresistible Collection from Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind that you can use any supplies you have on hand to create these cards.

Rock and Roll Technique

First let’s talk about the Rock and Roll Technique. It’s a super simple and fun way to add two different colors to your stamp images. For these cards, the flowers show off both Fresh Freesia and Gorgeous Grape colors. Start by inking up the flower image with the lighter color, the Fresh Freesia color. Next, let’s add some Gorgeous Grape. Take the inked-up flower image, hold it over the Gorgeous Grape ink pad on a slight angle, then rock and roll the image in the dark ink while it is angled! This will place the dark Gorgeous Grape ink on the edges of the flower while the center of the flower remains the light Fresh Freesia purple color.

The wider the angle you use for this technique, the less ink you will have on the edges of the image. Note the first card has just a little bit of dark purple ink on the image while the second card has a lot more of the dark purple color. For the second card, I simply didn’t angle the stamp as much as I rocked and rolled it around on the ink pad. I recommend watching the video below to see this technique in action!

Roll, Lift and Tap Technique

The second way you can use this technique in your cardmaking is by adding a lift and tap motion as you are rocking and rolling the image. I used this type of technique for two-toning the leaves and the greeting. Always start by inking up the image with the lighter color and then use the Rock and Roll technique with the darker color. For the leaves, I am using Soft Sea Foam (the lighter color) and Lost Lagoon (the darker color).

In up either the leaves or the greeting, with Soft Sea Foam ink. Angle the image over the Lost Lagoon ink pad, and use a rock, roll, lift and tap type of motion to add ink to the outer edges of the image. This type of motion is necessary when you are using irregular shaped images like the leaves or greeting. Be sure to check out the video to see the technique in action!
