3 Ways to Make Heart-Shaped Cards

Are you ready to make some simple and fun heart-shaped cards? Whether you’re crafting for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, or just want to surprise someone with a heartfelt “just because” card, I’ve got you covered. In this blog post, we’ll explore how to use the partial die-cutting technique to design three unique and versatile heart-shaped cards.

Side Fold Heart Card

First let’s talk about how to use the partial die cutting technique to create a side folding heart card. The side fold heart card is a classic yet versatile design that opens up horizontally. Start by cutting a piece of cardstock at 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches. Score the 8-1/2 inch side at 4-1/4 inches to create a card base. Position a large heart shaped die on the card front so that the left side of the die is overhanging the folded side of the card. For these cards, I am using the Hearts of Elegance die set. Run the cardstock and die through your embossing machine to create a side folding heart card.

With this style, you can showcase layers of patterned papers or embossed textures that emphasize the heart’s shape. Use the Friendly Seagulls stamps to add whimsical elements to your heart card.

Top Fold Heart Card

Next, let’s talk about how to create the top fold design. This particular design creates a vertical-opening card. Start with the same size piece of cardstock as the side fold card; 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches, scored at 4-1/4 inches. Position the top part of the heart die just so that it extends just above the fold. Run the cardstock and die through your embossing machine to cut out the heart shaped card. The die will cut through two layers of cardstock.

Pop-Out Hearts Card

If you’re looking to WOW your recipient, the accordion-style pop-out card is the way to go! This interactive design features a series of hearts that unfold as the card opens, creating a dramatic and delightful surprise. To create this card, start by creating two side folding card bases. I recommend running both card bases and the die through your embossing machine at the same time. The die will not cut through all 4 layers of cardstock, but it will leave an imprint in the third layer. You can use that imprint to position the heart die to cut out the last two layers. It’s a great way to ensure that your heart cards are equal in size.

Once you create the two side-folding heart card bases, you are ready to make the accordion fold. Open up the two heart shaped cards. Line up the middle hearts together and create a small score line, in the same place, on those two hearts. Fold on the score line and adhere the two hearts together at that score line.  Be sure to watch the video to see this process in action. The hearts will accordion fold one on top of the other.

  1. Do you have any ideas to decorate the hinged heart card. I would like to make that card for children.

    • You can decorate the hinged cards with any supplies. Stamp or write a message on each of the hearts to keep it simple.
