Easy DIY Wood Slice Ornaments

The holiday season is the perfect time to get creative! And these DIY wood slice ornaments are a fun and easy way to do it! Using patterned paper, you can turn plain wood slices into adorable ornaments that reflect your style and holiday spirit. Here’s how to make them in just a few steps!

Prepping the Wood Slices

Start with pre-drilled wood slices, which are available at most craft stores or online. They are light weight and come in a variety of sizes. For these ornaments, I am using wood slices which are 2-1/2 to 3 inches in diameter. However, this technique will work on any size wood slice.

Paint the front surface of the wood slice using a white chalk paint. You may have to paint the surface twice to achieve complete covering. Let dry. Note: You can use a heat tool to dry the paint faster.

Once the paint is dry, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the front of the wood slice using a brush. Allow it to dry completely.

Select patterned paper that has little images you can cut (or tear) out of the paper. The adorable little penguin images on these ornaments come from the Snowy Scenes Designer Series Paper from Stampin’ Up! They work perfect for creating the snowy scene. Simply use the paper tearing technique to tear around the entire image. Lay the penguin on the wood slice, cover it with a piece of parchment paper and use a heat press (or iron) to set the image. The heat will re-activate the modge podge so the image will adhere to wood slice.

Decorating the Ornaments

Once the penguin image is securely attached, you are ready to add some shimmer and shine! The snowy texture which surrounds each of the penguins was created with some shimmery white embossing paste and glitter.

Start by adding the embossing paste all around the penguin using a palette knife. Spread out the shimmer paste and then wipe the excess paste back into the jar. Next, take the palette knife and tap it all over the shimmer paste to give it lift and add texture. Once you have a nice texture, sprinkle the paste with glitter, tap off the excess glitter and let it dry.

You can decorate these cute little ornaments with any supplies you have on hand. Thread a piece of twine through the pre-drilled hole to create a hanger, add a few wooden beads, and then tie a knot or bow at the top. You can also tie a bit of coordinating ribbon around the base of the hanger to decorate it up a bit more.

Handmade ornaments are such a great gift giving idea! I love the personalized touch of receiving something that is handmade. These wood slice ornaments are not only easy to make but they can also be personalized by adding a name or even the year to the back of the ornament. Don’t forget to also create a coordinating card! You can find a few coordinating card ideas, featuring these penguins, in my latest blog post HERE.

I hope you enjoyed these ornament ideas and are inspired to give it a try! Be sure to watch the short video below to see the creation of one of these ornaments in action. Have a fun and creative day my friends! ~ Lynn

  1. These are just too cute for words. I have so many of the things needed so I have a project for this weekend after a quick trip to the store on Friday.
