Have you ever tried the black ice technique in your card making? If you have, you may have found it to be quite challenging. Well today you will learn the secret to creating a stunning black ice effect every time! And I have two different ways you can use this technique in your card making.
The cards feature the Peaceful Evergreens and Shepherd’s Card stamp sets from the Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind that this technique will work with many different stamp sets.
The Technique
First let’s talk about the technique. It’s basically an ink pad dragging technique across silver or gold foil. You can really use any kind of foil paper. However, I found this technique to be super simple when you use a brushed foil. Simply drag a black ink pad across the foil, going with the grain, to create the streaks. The texture on the brushed foil enables you to add just the right amount of ink.
The technique works well with a permanent ink like Jet Black Stazon. You cannot use a dye-based ink that cleans up easily with water as it will not withstand the next part of the black ice process.
Once you have streaked the foil with black ink, dry it with a heat tool. The final step in this process is where the magic happens! Take a versamark pad and drag it across the foil. Drag with a light touch from top to bottom going with the grain of the foil. Use a light touch to streak it. Streaking gives the illusion of sets of ice crystals. Drag across the entire foil piece. Sprinkle the foil with clear embossing powder, tap off the excess powder and heat to set.
Black Ice Card Ideas
Now that you know how to create the black ice look, you are ready to create some cards! You can use this technique with any color foil. However, today I am featuring the black ice look on silver and gold brushed foil. The silver foil is my favorite way to use the black ice technique. It’s hard to capture the beauty of this technique in pictures!
The gold foil gives a completely different look to the cards. The layouts are similar to the silver foil cards. However, I used some Basic Beige cardstock as well as some of the gold-colored paper from the Season of Elegance DSP pack in the background. You can get a complete list of supplies and instructions below.
