Faux Tile Technique for Card Making

Learn how to use the faux tile technique in your card making. This technique enables you to create a fun and simple tile background for your stamped images. And I have two different ways you can use this technique in your card making.

The cards feature the Caring Leaves stamp set from Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind you can use any stamp set you have on hand with this technique.

The Technique

First let’s talk about the technique. The faux tile look in the background of this card comes from some simple scoring. I use the Simply Scored Scoring Tool for this technique for two reasons. First, it provides deep grooves in the cardstock. The second reason is that it makes the scoring process much faster as I only need to move my scoring stylus instead of the paper.

Start by cutting a square piece of cardstock. I used a 3 x 3 inch piece to create the first card. Turn the cardstock so it resembles a diamond shape and place it on the scoring board. I placed the top point at the 6-inch mark on the board. Line up the top and bottom points of the paper in the 6-inch groove and score from point to point. Next, move the stylus over 1/4-inch and make another score line. Repeat the scoring process every 1/4-inch across the cardstock.

Turn the cardstock to the next corner and repeat the 1/4-inch scoring process across the cardstock. This will create little 1/4-inch squares (tiles) across the cardstock. I recommend watching the video for some tips to make the scoring process easier.

Faux Tile Card Ideas

Now that you know how to create the faux tile look on your cardstock, you are ready to stamp some images! For these cards, I am using the Caring Leaves stamp set. However, keep in mind you can use any stamp set you have on hand with this technique.

The first card features 1/4-inch faux tile squares on a 3 x 3 inch piece of white cardstock. Randomly stamp the leaf images on the faux tile using a variety of different colors. Don’t use a lot of pressure when you stamp as you want to the tile look to show though the images.

The second card features 1/2-inch faux tile squares on a 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 inch piece of white cardstock. Randomly stamp the leaf images on the faux tile using a variety of different colors. The cool thing about this technique is that you can use any size square shape, and you can use different scoring increments (you are not limited to 1/4 or 1/2 inch). There are so many possibilities!
