Card Making Hack with Die Cut Shapes

Wanna make two cards from just one die cut shape? This easy card making hack will change how you look at and use your die cut pieces! It’s so fun and it’s a great way to use up scraps!

The cards feature a variety of products from the Full of Life suite from Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind you can use any patterned paper and supplies you have on hand with this card making hack.

Creating the Focal Points

First let’s talk about how to die cut the focal points for the cards. This is where the card making hack comes in! Basically, we will be using ALL the pieces created from the die cut heart shape. Yes, we will be using those small scrap pieces that you would typically throw away! It creates a beautiful inlay design for one of the hearts.

I started by choosing one of the Full of Life patterned papers. I liked the look of the multi-colored patterns in this pack and thought it would make a fun focal point! Add an adhesive sheet to the back of the patterned paper before die cutting it so you end up with adhesive on all the die cut shapes.

I die cut the layering heart shape into the patterned paper using the dies from the Friends for Life Bundle from Stampin’ Up! There is a die that creates the heart outline and a second die which is the more detailed heart (which creates all the scrap pieces).

Once you have die cut the heart shapes, pop out all the pieces from the center of the detailed heart. Take the detailed heart shape (which had all the pieces) and lay it on a 3-1/4 x 3-1/4 inch piece of white cardstock. You will be using it as a template to add all those pieces back into the heart shape! Peel off the adhesive backing on each of those little pieces and adhere them into the coordinating spaces on the template (refer to pic#2). Once you have them adhered, simply remove the template to reveal the inlay design!

Two Simple Cards

Now that you know how to use this card making hack with die cut shapes, you can create two cards with different focal points! The first card features the “template” heart shape. It’s the shape that had all the little pieces in it. Before you can create the first card, you must use that outline shape as a template to adhere all the little pieces to create the focal point for the second card. Using your dies as a template to create an inlay design is such a great cardmaking hack!

Both of these cards have the exact same layout. The only difference is the orientation of the card base and, of course, the different style focal point.
