Pinwheel Design for Card Making

Let’s talk about how to create pinwheel cards! This card design may look complicated but it’s a very simple paper piecing technique! It’s also a great way to use up scrap papers.

The cards feature the NEW 2024-2026 In Color Collection and the Country Flowers Bundle from Stampin’ Up! These NEW products will be available beginning in May 2024. However, keep in mind you can use any supplies you have on hand with this card design.

Pinwheel Design

First let’s talk about the supplies for the pinwheel design. Start by choosing the designer paper and/or cardstock you want to use. Scrap papers work well for this technique. You can also mix and match different patterned papers with cardstock to create the pinwheel. Start by cutting eight pieces of paper at 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 inches. For these cards, I cut two of each of the four different patterned papers from the In Color Collection.

Next, cut two squares from a piece of cardstock which coordinates with the patterned papers you are using. The cardstock squares measure 2-5/8 x 2-5/8 inches. The square shapes are adhered together to form an 8-pointed star. The patterned paper pieces are adhered to each of the 8 different points of the cardstock pieces to create the pinwheel. I recommend watching the video to see the creation of the pinwheel as there are a few tips and tricks you need to know.

Variation on Design

Once you create the pinwheel, there are several different ways you can use it in your card making. The first three cards, as shared above, feature the pinwheel adhered to a card front so the points form a square and diamond shape. These next two card ideas feature the pinwheel adhered slightly off center. Notice how the points of the pinwheel are not centered vertically as in the first three designs.

Besides adhering the pinwheel in different directions, you can also use a variety of different card layouts to showcase it! Be sure to download the tutorial as it includes the measurements and supplies for all 5 card layouts.
