Learn how to use layering shapes to add an interlocking section to just about any fun fold card to keep it closed! And I have two different ways you can use this technique in your cardmaking.
The cards feature the Cake Fancy stamp set and the Thoughtful Expressions Dies from Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind you can use any supplies you have on hand with this technique.
Creating the Closure
First let’s talk about how to create the closure or interlocking section for this fun fold card. The basic concept for creating the interlocking section of a fun fold card involves the use of layering shapes. Notice the focal point of this card has two layers. The first layer features a large decorative shape cut from purple cardstock. The second layer features a slightly smaller decorative shape cut from a piece of white cardstock. These two shapes, along with the stamped image, make up the focal point for the card. Adhere these two shapes together with a few stampin’ dimensionals.
The third decorative shape is much smaller and contains the greeting for the card. Simply arrange the shapes on the card front so that they overlap with each other. The shape with the greeting is tucked in between the layers of cardstock used for the focal point. Once the shapes are adhered to the card front, you should be able to freely tuck and untuck the greeting from in between the two layers of cardstock used for the focal point. This is what creates the interlocking section to keep the card closed!
Interlocking Greeting
Now that you understand how to create the interlocking section, the possibilities are endless! You can layer together any size shapes to create a closure for most fun fold cards. This next card idea is simply the exact same gatefold style card as the first one, I just decorated it in portrait style instead of landscape style.
To create the base for either of these gatefold cards, cut a 4-1/4 x 11 inch piece of white cardstock. Score the 11-inch side at 2-3/4 and 8-1/4 inches to create the two front flaps of the gatefold card.
For this portrait style card, I changed the layering around to create the closure. The greeting is layered with two pieces of cardstock. The focal point tucks into the two cardstock layers of the greeting. It’s just another way to create the closure for the card.
