Decorative Edge for Card Making

Learn how to create a decorative edge on your cards with die cut shapes. And I have two different ways you can use this technique in your card making. The cards feature the Autumn Leaves Bundle from Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind you can use any die cut shapes to create a decorative edge.

Decorative Edge with Shapes

The first way you can create a decorative edge is with individual die cut shapes. Start by choosing the die cut shapes you would like to use. For these cards I am using a variety of different leaves from the Autumn Leaves Bundle. However, this technique will work with any die cut shapes. Start by using different colored cardstock to create the die cut shapes. You can also stamp images and die cut them out.

Create a standard card base by cutting a 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inch piece of cardstock. Score the 8-1/2 inch side at 4-1/4 inches. Next, cut off a 1 x 5-1/2 inch piece from the right side of the card front. Take all of the die cut shapes and arrange them on the right side of the card front. Be sure to allow them to hang off the card front a bit. Once you have an arrangement you like, simply adhere the pieces to the edge of the card front and then decorate as desired. Watch the video HERE to see this technique in action.

Partial Die Cutting Technique

The second way to create a decorative edge is to use the partial die cutting technique. For this technique, we will be partially cutting the shapes into the card front instead of adhering them individually. Once you partially die cut the shapes into the card front, simply trim off the excess cardstock in between the leaves. I highly recommend watching the video HERE to see this technique in action.

The partially die cut leaves create such a beautiful edge on this card. The card is decorated with the same type of die cut shapes I used to create the decorative edge on the first card too! There are so many possibilities with this technique! Give it try!
