In this week’s video you will learn how to create silhouettes with die cut shapes. And I have three easy layouts you can use with the silhouettes in your card making. The cards feature the NEW Rhino Ready Bundle and the Enjoy the Journey Designer Series Paper from Stampin’ Up! However, keep in mind that you can use any supplies you have on hand with these card layouts.
Creating the Silhouettes
First let’s talk about how to create the silhouettes. You can use just about any die cut shapes for this technique. The key is to cut the shapes from a piece of black cardstock. Nature shapes such as trees, flowers, leaves, etc. work well for silhouettes.
Once you have determined which die cut shapes you will use, then you can create the background. For these cards, I chose to create a pretty sky scene for the background. The background features a bit of ink blending with Crushed Curry and Pumpkin Pie ink. You can make the background as dark or light as you want. The more ink blending you do, the darker the colors will be in the background. Once the background is complete, simply add the silhouette die cut shapes to complete the scene.
Easy Layouts
Ink blending is a great way to create a background. However, I found a few easier ways to do it! I love the simplicity of using designer series paper. The next two card layouts feature one of the patterned papers from the Enjoy the Journey Designer Series Paper pack. The background already features a beautiful yellow and orange sky. I simply added the black die cut silhouette shapes and the white circle shape. It’s super simple and creates a stunning effect.
The layout for the first card is simply a 4 x 5-1/4 inch piece of the Enjoy the Journey DSP. The second card layout features a 4-1/2 x 4 inch piece of the same DSP. Only this time I cut the DSP into 3/4 inch and 1-1/2 wide panels. Adhere the panels by leaving about a 1/4 inch of space in between each piece of DSP. It creates a beautiful window effect on the card.
