This week I have been playing around with a simple masking technique with torn paper. And I have 3 different ways you can use this technique in your card making. First, I used this masking technique with the July 2022 Paper Pumpkin kit called Sending Good Thoughts. You can check out those projects HERE. I had so much fun with this masking technique that I decided to create a variety of cards using the Cottage Rose Bundle. I really wanted to show you how easy it is to use this masking technique with any supplies you have on hand.
Torn Paper Mask
Let’s start by discussing the technique for masking with torn paper. It’s a super simple technique which you can use with any stamp set and supplies you have on hand. Start with two 4 x 5-1/4 inch pieces of cardstock; one white and one in any color. The white cardstock is for the card, the other cardstock piece is for creating your torn mask. I am using vanilla cardstock to create the mask. Tear the vanilla cardstock in half down the middle of the 4-inch side. You will end up with two torn pieces of cardstock measuring 5-1/4 inches in length.

Lay the two vanilla mask pieces over the top and bottom of the white cardstock piece. Use a sponge or blending brush to add some Petal Pink and Crumb Cake ink to the center section (in between the torn paper masks). After adding color, stamp a few images across that space. The picture on the left looks like a hot mess but you will have a “Ta Da” moment when you remove the mask. The mask ensures that color and stamped images stay within the center of the white cardstock. It’s such a cool effect on the card. Feel free to add as many or as few of additional decorations as desired.
Cottage Rose Cards
Now that you understand the basics of how to mask with torn paper, the possibilities for creating really are endless! Plus, you can re-use the same masks over and over again to create a variety of cards. I have two more designs to share with you. This first design features the use of the torn paper masks, diagonally, across the upper and lower parts of the white cardstock. Make sure the torn paper is facing the corner as you will be adding color to each of the two corners as shown. It’s the same concept for creating the colorful areas. Add a bit of color and some stamped images, then remove the mask and decorate as desired.

The second card features the use of one of the two torn paper masks. Simply lay it down the center of the white cardstock with the torn side facing to the left of the cardstock. Add color and a few stamp images, remove the mask and decorate as desired.

Lovely. I have not done torn paper in a long time. We forget how fun some of those older techniques are. Pretty and simple.
So true! I haven’t played around with masking in a long time. It was fun to bring it back!
