Drapery Fold Card Technique

If you love accordion fold cards, you are going love this fun little drapery fold card technique! It’s a fun and simple accordion fold and another great way to show off your patterned papers.  And I have two different ways you can use this technique in your card making.

Creating the Drapery Fold

The drapery fold is not actually a fun fold card per say. The fun fold section decorates the front of a standard 5-1/2 x 4-1/4 inch card base. The technique involves creating an accordion fold design using some pretty patterned paper. The drapery fold actually creates a unique and beautiful back drop for the card.

The creation of the accordion fold is pretty simple. Start by cutting a 10 x 4-3/4 inch piece of patterned paper. Measure 3/4 inches down from the top and 3/4 inch up from the bottom and make a little mark on the paper. These marks need to be opposite each other so that you can cut the paper in half diagonally by lining up the marks in your paper trimmer. Once the triangular pieces are cut, start on the larger side and score the piece at 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9 inches. Accordion fold the paper and adhere to a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of white cardstock and then adhere to the card front! I highly recommend watching the video to see the creation of the drapery fold in action. For more accordion fun fold card ideas, check out my latest post HERE.

Card Design Tips

Now that you know how to create the drapery fold, let’s talk about the different ways in which you can use it to decorate your card front. If you have been following me for awhile, then you know I like to play around with different ways to use a technique or fold. One of my favorite things to do is to change the orientation of my card designs. So I tend to create them in portrait and landscape style. The portrait style card is the first one I shared. The landscape style card is showcased below. The creation of the drapery fold is exactly the same but by changing the orientation of the card I have created a completely different look.

The other little design tip I have for you is to play around with this drapery fold using a variety of patterned papers you may already have on hand. When you change out the patterned papers, it typically will result in a change in the color scheme for the card. Yes, this drapery card technique can be used with ANY patterned papers and any stamp set! So that means you can create cards for really any occasion.

In Bloom Card Ideas

Besides creating the fun drapery fold cards, I decided to create a few additional cards with the pieces of leftover patterned paper. The drapery fold cards require a 10 x 4-3/4 inch piece of patterned paper. You can actually make 4 drapery fold cards from one 12 x 12 inch sheet of patterned paper. So that means you have some leftover paper to play with. So I decided to use a few of the leftover pieces to create these two cards and the rest of the leftover DSP was used to decorate the inside of the cards.
