As the holiday season comes to an end, it’s a great time to start creating birthday cards! While I do make birthday cards throughout the year, I tend to make the majority of them at beginning of every year as I like to have a variety of cards on hand. And with the 2021 Stampin’ Up! catalogs coming out in January, these birthday cards feature brand new products. So today I have 7 different card ideas to share that feature the beautiful new Flower and Field Designer Series Paper.
Creating the Embellishments
Now the cool thing about this patterned paper is you can cut out the images to create beautiful embellishments for your cards. Yes, it does mean a bit of fussy cutting is required. However, once you start using the images in your card making, you are gonna love it! And I bet you have some patterned paper on hand right now that you can use with these card layouts.
These first three cards feature the small yellow and orange flowers cut from the patterned paper to use as embellishments. These little images make perfect embellishments for these birthday cards. The other patterned paper, used in the card layout, is the Bumblebee colored Polka Dot pattern from the Flower and Fields DSP pack. I cut out all of the images from one sheet of DSP before I began creating any cards.
Here are the measurements for the layouts of each of the birthday cards:
Card#1 ~ Cut a 5 x 3-3/4 inch piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock. Cut a 1-1/2 x 5 inch piece of patterned paper and adhere it to the left side of cardstock. Emboss the right side with your favorite embossing folder.
Card#2 ~ Cut a 1-3/4 x 5 inch piece of pumpkin pie cardstock and emboss it with your favorite embossing folder. Cut two pieces of patterned paper at 1 x 5 inches. Cut a piece of black cardstock at 1 x 3-3/4 inches and tear one of the edges.
Card#3 ~ Cut 2 x 5 inch piece of patterned paper. Cut two 3/4 x 5 inch pieces of pumpkin pie cardstock and emboss them with your favorite embossing folders.
The Focal Point
As you can see, the small floral images certainly make great little embellishments for the birthday cards. However, you can also cut much larger floral images and use them as the focal point in your card making. These next couple of card ideas showcase some fun ways to cut out the patterned paper to create large clusters of flowers.

The first two birthday cards feature a cluster of flowers cut from one of the Flower and Field DSP sheets. The size of the focal point you create depends upon how many floral images you would like to include. I recommend cutting a large cluster of flowers from the DSP and then laying it on a standard card front to see if it fits. If it’s too large, you can also cut some of the floral images off (and use those small images to embellish other cards).
The first card features a 3 x 5 inch piece of the polka dot patterned paper in the background. The second card features a 2-1/2 x 5 inch piece of patterned paper in the background. The background papers give you an idea of how large I cut the cluster of floral images from my DSP.
The background for the next two cards feature the same polka dot patterned paper. The first card showcases a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of patterned paper. The second card features a 3 x 4 inch piece of patterned paper. Notice the floral focal points are slightly different on each of these cards. You can easily see I cut off the yellow and orange flowers to create the focal point for the second card.
Simple Birthday Cards
These 7 card ideas are very simple to create! And I only cut up one sheet of the Flower and Fields DSP to create all of the flower clusters. I did use some of the floral images to decorate the inside of my birthday cards too! Here are a few inside decorating ideas:

You might have also noticed there were a variety of daisy flowers featured in the picture at the beginning of this post. Well, I used those beautiful flowers to create the 4 birthday cards which I shared in a previous post. You can check them out HERE.
I hope you enjoyed these simple birthday cards and learned some fun ways to use your patterned papers! So take a peek at the paper stash you have in your craft area and get busy creating some fun cards!
And be sure to check out my NEW birthday card making club! The club starts in January, you can get all of the details HERE.
Have a fun and creative day! ~ Lynn
