This set is super cute and so much fun! So today I have 3 different card designs to share.

Stepping Up Your Cards

Stepping up your cards is a great way to get the most of your favorite card designs. The concept for stepping up cards is simple. Start with a basic card design and then simply add additional supplies to change the look of the card. The stepping up process can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. There are so many different ways to step up your card designs. The key to stepping up your cards is to use the same layout, just add additional embellishments, layers or accents to change the look.

The first card features the basic design that I am using to create the other two cards. Start with a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of white cardstock. The focal point is simply the Darling Donkey image stamped on a scalloped rectangular shape. The background of the card features 3 different pieces of patterned paper measuring 3/4 x 4 inches. Use your favorite coloring tools to add color to the Darling Donkey image and embellish the card as desired. The second card features the same focal point and small patterned paper pieces. However, there are some subtle differences. The card features a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of polka dot patterned paper instead of the white cardstock. Also notice the different layers for the greeting as well. These are very simple changes which maintain the basic design yet give the card a very different look.

Darling Donkeys Z Fold Card

The third way to step up your card design is to transition it to a fun fold card. Of course I am featuring a z fold card idea as it’s one of my favorite fun fold card designs to use. Plus, this style of fun fold card coordinates perfecting with the previous designs. Notice how the patterned paper design from the first two cards carries over onto this card design. The focal point is also the same. However with a few more layers and supplies the card sports a whole new look!

To create the z fold card, cut a 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inch piece of cardstock. Score the 8-1/2 inch side at 2-1/8 and 4-1/4 inches. Fold the card in half on the 4-1/4 inch score line then fold the 2-1/8 inch section back onto itself to create the z fold. The small patterned paper pieces on the fun fold flaps measure 3/4 x 1-7/8 inches; the large gray polka dot pieces measure 1-7/8 x 5-1/4 inches. The key to creating the design is to work from the inside out. Adhere a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of white cardstock on the inside of the card. Add the 3/4 x 4 inch paper strips across the center. Now open up the card and use the inside section to guide the placement of the small strips on the front flaps of the card.

  1. Lynn, you did a great job showing the meaning of “Stepping it Up”. I’m thinking I just might use your idea for my next class. Darling Donkeys is definitely my favorite SAB set. Did you fussy cut your donkeys or do you use a electronic machine for your samples? Thanks for the inspiration.

    • Thank you Heidi! These would be great cards for a class. I did cut these out with my scan and cut. However, I have cut out several with a scissor as it’s pretty easy to do.

  2. Lynn I was blown away by the cuteness of these little guys, and your Sunday video was perfect! In fact, I’m getting ready for my Christmas Open House (COVID style) and wanted to make some cards for the display table for new products. May I case yours? I had to call SUP to order the paper, but I just adore these cuties! Thanks for the inspiration! Hugs and Merry Christmas !

    • Hi Bobbi, Thank you. Yes, of course you can case these. This is such an adorable set. I think it is one of my favorites SAB items so far. Happy Holidays! Best wishes on your open house!
