3 Ways to Use Sentiment Backgrounds in Card Making

Greetings or sentiments are typically used just once on a card. Greetings are commonly used on the front of cards while sentiments are used on the inside of the card. However, today I have some unique card making ideas that feature the use of sentiment backgrounds. And I have 3 different ways you can use sentiment backgrounds in your card making.

Stamping Sentiment Backgrounds

The first way you can use sentiments as your background is by stamping them. You can use any sentiments as well as a variety of different ones to stamp the background on a card. This first card features a variety of the sentiments from the Nothing More Than stamp set by Stampin’ Up!

I like to use multiple ink colors to stamp the background. However, you can also just use one color to create a Tone on Tone look which we will talk about shortly. For this card, I used Early Espresso and Crumb Cake ink to stamp the different sentiments. Basically, it involves randomly stamping the sentiments across a piece of cardstock. Once you have achieved the desired look, simply decorate the card as desired. Don’t forget to also do a bit of decorating on the inside of the card too. For this particular card, I left quite a bit of white space so that I could write a personalized message.

Tone on Tone Sentiment Backgrounds

Besides stamping sentiments with a variety of colors in the background, you can also use them to create a tone on tone look. Tone on tone means that you use the same color ink as your cardstock. So for the card above, you could actually stamp the sentiments on Early Espresso or Crumb Cake cardstock using the same color ink as the cardstock you are using.

The same concept holds true for this card. The only difference is that instead of using ink and stamps, I am using die cut words. The die cut words were cut from the same color cardstock as the background. So notice how three of the “coffee” words are very subtle in the background. They were cut from a piece of Early Espresso cardstock. The fourth word was cut from a piece of Crumb Cake cardstock which is a lighter color brown. Combining tone on tone with a “pop” of color, adds a nice effect to the card.

Die Cut Sentiment Backgrounds

The third way you can create a sentiment background also involves the use of word dies. For this particular card, the word die cuts are arranged along the outside edge of the card front. Using them in this fashion creates a “frame” around the outer edges of the card front.

Instead of using the same color cardstock, choose a bolder color, one that “pops.” For this particular card, the die cut words are cut from white cardstock and adhered to a piece of Early Espresso cardstock. Notice how the white die cut words “pop” on the dark cardstock. Once you have the frame created, then simply create the focal point for the center of the card.
