This week’s video features some beautiful Magnolia cards created with the partial die cutting technique. If you are not familiar with this technique, you will definitely want to check out the video. The technique works with any die cut and enables you to create all sorts of unique card designs.
In the video, I show you how to use the partial die cutting technique to create a unique focal point on your card front using stamped images from the Good Morning Magnolia set. However, don’t limit yourself to using this technique just on card fronts. Just get creative with it!
The Technique
Now die cutting requires the use of some type of embossing machine like the Big Shot, Big Kick, Cuttlebug, etc. If you are familiar with die cutting, then you probably are familiar with the “sandwich” that you have to build in order to properly cut with the dies with your embossing machine.
The basic concept of die cutting involves creating the sandwich layers. The layers are as follows: standard platform, then the thin die adapter and then one of the clear cutting plates. Next, lay the cardstock on the cutting plate and place the die on top. You can use washi tape to hold the die in place over a stamped image. Lay the other clear cutting plate on top of the die and cardstock. Then run it through the embossing machine to cut out the image.
Now the partial die cutting technique involves the same type of die cutting process and “sandwich” creation. The only difference is that when we apply the top cutting plate, will be leaving a section of the die exposed. Meaning that the top cutting plate will cover only part of the die…the part that we want to cut out. The other part of the die that is exposed (the part that is not covered by the top clear cutting plate) will not be cut out. It’s a pretty cool little technique!
Magnolia Card Ideas
Although the partial die cutting technique will work with any dies, I love the look I get when using the large Magnolia image. Of course, the little magnolia is pretty too!
The cards feature some of the beautiful images from the Good Morning Magnolia stamp set. Oh, and of course the Magnolia Memory dies which coordinate with the stamp set. The cards also feature a simple coloring technique using watercolor pencils and a blender pen.
