How To Watercolor Stamped Images

There are so many simple and fun ways to watercolor stamped images. One of my favorite watercolor techniques for cards involves using regular ink and an aqua painter to spread the color. It’s the perfect way to watercolor flowers especially if you want to use a variety of colors to stamp your images.

In this watercolor stamping tutorial, I will show you how to watercolor stamped images simply by using regular ink, water and a brush. I will also show you how to make a sunflower card using the Painted Harvest stamp set from Stampin Up! One of my favorite things about this watercoloring technique is it doesn’t require any special ink! That means you can use any stamps and any color ink for watercoloring stamped images! Yes, the possibilities are endless!

The video also features an aqua painter which is one of my favorite watercoloring tools. You simply unscrew the top, add water, screw the top back on and you have your watercolor brush all ready to go!  You can also use a regular paint brush and a cup of water for this technique but once you use an aqua painter, you will never go back to a regular brush!

As mentioned in the video, I have a few other sunflower card ideas to share today.  The sunflowers on these cards were created with the same watercoloring technique featured in the video. So once you have learned about the technique, you can use the instructions below to create these additional cards!

For this card, simply start with a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock for the base of your card. Cut a 3/4 x 4-1/4 inch piece of the Early Espresso Polka Dot patterned paper from the Neutrals DSP pack and adhere it across the center of the card. Cut a 2-1/8 x 2-1/8 inch square from a piece of Watercolor Paper (or use one of the stitched shapes framelits). Stamp the image from the painted harvest stamp set in the middle of the square using crushed curry ink and watercolor it with an aqua painter as shown in the video. Let it dry and mount the Watercolor Paper square to a 2-1/2 x 2-1/2 inch piece of Early Espresso cardstock. Adhere the squares over the DSP with a few dimensionals. Punch out a 1 inch circle from a piece of the DSP and adhere it to the center of the flower with a few dimensionals. Stamp a few leaf images, using Mossy Meadow ink, on a scrap piece of watercolor paper and watercolor the leaves with an aqua painter using the same technique as shown in the video. Add the leaves to the card as shown. For the finishing touch, stamp a sentiment on the bottom of the card using Soft Suede ink.

For this card, start with a piece of Crushed Curry cardstock for the base of the card. Cut a 5-1/4 x 4 inch piece of Very Vanilla cardstock and a 5 x 3-3/4 inch piece of Early Espresso cardstock. Emboss the Early Espresso cardstock with the Layered Leaves embossing folder. Cut out a large label from a piece of Watercolor Paper, using the Stitched Label Framelits, and create the sunflower as shown in the video. Once the new holiday catalog goes live (it will be live on September 5th!), you can cut a piece of this fun Chicken Wire and adhere to the card front. Then cut a 1 x 3-3/4 inch piece of the polka dot Crushed Curry Pattern from the Regals DSP pack and adhere it over the top of the chicken wire. Adhere the Very Vanilla and Early Espresso pieces together and tie a bit of very vanilla trim around these pieces before you adhere them to the card front. Next, adhere the label, with the sunflower, to the card with a few dimensionals. For the finishing touch, embellish with a little leaf trinket.
